Creating Beauty Within Your Own Home

Social media has been a great tool for myself in regards to home decor. You can browse through the extensive images that pop up and the images don't seem to end. Maybe that's a little overwhelming to some. But I love to see what people have done in their own homes and even showcase in a home magazine.

The downside is that there are trends. Trends are not a new concept, but the idea of keeping up with the trends is exhausting. One minute shiplap is in and the next it's not. One minute bright colorful walls are in and now all white is the rage.

I'm not drawn to one idea of design. I like to pick and choose from different tastes because that's what I like.

My grandparents had a lot of victorian sytle furniture and artwork when I was growing up and I loved every piece. I didn't care that it was out of fashion or old. It had character.

I'm drawn to the southwestern pieces because I love bold patterns and earthy hues. As I type this our living room couches (that we've had for six years and are amazing) have a bold pattern on them! We live in the desert and I know that influences me a bit, too.

I know what I don't like. And I won't share those because we do not need to have the same taste in design. Because your home is your home and mine and mine. Imagine if we all had the exact same taste in design -- how boring!

We get hung up on what's trendy to keep up with whoever we're competing against. But I don't care about trends because my home is exactly that, a home. A home where I create beauty in resourceful ways. Like finding items at the thrift store or swap meet and printing artwork. It's not a museum to be carefully walked about with our hands behind our back. I have little children and my home showcases that in different ways.

We have this fantastic opportunity to beautify our homes that is welcoming and warming. We're told, as Christians, to be hospitable. Does your home come across as hospitable?

How do you beautify your home? Do you change things up? What's your design taste? Can't wait to hear your thoughts.
