1. Plan Free or Low-Cost Outdoor Activities

Nature offers countless opportunities for family fun that cost little or nothing. We recently hiked in an area that's known for dirt bikes and , but there are also awesome trails and hidden treasures in those mountains. Our kids love hiking and exploring new places. We've taken them on a hike where you have to climb up with a rope to help you and another one where metal handles were needed to go down.

National parks are a great low-cost outdoor activity. You pay $20 - $30 and then you have 7 days to use the pass. Or, you could get the America the Beautiful Pass and pay $80 to enter 2,000 Federal Recreation sites. We've taken our children to several National Parks and they love exploring the beauty of nature.

2. Host Game Nights at Home

Our Care Group a couple of years ago decided to have a game night where we would rotate homes. It was great to have the adults and older kids playing games while the younger ones entertained each other by hanging outside or playing inside.

My husband and I chose to host a New Year's Day party, and everywhere you turned, there was a board game or card game in progress. Once more, the older kids were engaged in games while the younger ones played outside.

3. Cook Together and Make Meals

Eating out can quickly drain a family budget. Cooking meals at home saves money and offers a chance to bond. Living rurally has its benefits because we hardly eat out. My husband and I don't cook together often but when we do it's great fun. I've had the kids help me many times as well and we're not only bonding, but the kids are learning fantastic life skills.

Example: Have a homemade pizza night where each family member creates their own pizza with toppings they love. This adds creativity and fun to dinner time. One time Gentry helped me bake mini pavlovas and we had toppings avaible for everyone to choose from.

4. Use Community Resources

Our community is small but it offers weekly swap meets, thrift store, events at the Family Center, and an annual festival. I've also partnered with our Family Center and put on a weekly Story time and Craft day for a month.

The nearby town has a college that hosts various performances, and I intend to attend them more often. Last year, I went to a play with friends, and it was an enjoyable and affordable activity.

5. Embrace DIY Crafts and Projects

Crafting at home can be a fun way for kids and adults to express creativity while using inexpensive materials. Use recycled items, natural materials, or supplies you already have to create art, decorations, or gifts.

Example: Make seasonal decorations using leaves, pinecones, or paper. This keeps costs low and adds a personal touch to your home.

6. Swap and Share with Other Families

I recently suggested to my friend that we should organize a Homeschool Exchange, as I know many of us have items we no longer need or that didn't work out for us. My friends and I often ask each other if we're interested in hand-me-downs, whether for our children or ourselves. I have to admit, I get a bit excited when I discover that the hand-me-downs are for me.

7. Create a Family Savings Challenge

Turn saving money into a fun family project. Set a goal, such as saving for a special outing or a new board game, and track progress together. Reward milestones with small celebrations that don’t break the bank.

8. Explore Educational and Fun Apps

Our family has a rule that from Sunday-Friday, technology is not allowed until 4 PM. There are moments where we need to watch a video for school, but I am pretty strict on the rule.

That being said, I don't have a lot of educatinal apps to recommend, but I know they're out there. YouTube is a great place to find free, fun, educational videos.

9. Take Advantage of Secondhand Finds

Thrift stores, garage sales, and online marketplaces often have great deals on toys, books, and clothes. Buying secondhand saves money and supports sustainable living.

Example: Look for gently used board games or sports equipment that your family can enjoy without paying full price.

10. Make Family Traditions Around Simple Joys

Create traditions that focus on togetherness rather than spending. This could be a monthly nature walk, a special breakfast on weekends, a storytelling night, or spending an extra ten minutes with one of your kids when they're in already in bed.

We've somehow come to believe that having fun requires spending a lot of money. Don't be misled into thinking you need to go into debt to experience joy and enjoyment. The ability to plan and budget has become a forgotten skill that needs revival. Our society's desire for instant gratification is a reason why so many people are in debt, prioritizing their wants over their needs. There are plenty of frugal activities that can still bring you joy.

.I hope these 10 joyful ways have encouraged you to live frugally and joyfully. Seek out the variety of nature that God has created. Seek out the friendships around you. Find joy in the simple, little things.
